NE Handloom & Handicrafts fair begins
Will help in building ties between Manipuri and Tripuri: Tripura minister

A five-day North East Handloom & Handicrafts Mela jointly organised by United Committee Manipur (UCM) and Puthiba Welfare & Cultural Society (PWCS) commenced from Sunday at Puthiba Shanglen complex, Abhoynagar, Agartala.
The inaugural function was attended by Tripura's tribal welfare, handloom and handicraft department minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia as chief guest, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujamna as president and Puthiba Welfare & Cultural society vice president Niranjan Dutta as special guest.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Mevar Kumar noted that Manipuris and Tripuris have been closely related since period of monarchy and expressed hope that the fair will help strengthen the bond between the Tripuri and Manipuri.
UCM president Joychandra pledged to strive for the wellbeing of Manipuris settling in various parts of India and beyond.
In order to help and make the settlers preserve the culture and tradition of Manipur, the handloom and handicrafts fair is being organised by joining hands with Puthiba Welfare & Cultural Society, he added.
As Manipuris are also residing in Bangladesh and Myanmar efforts would be made to acquaint them in the production of Manipuri handloom and handicrafts, he said and assured to engage trainers and experts for learning the arts, Joychandra stated.
Pointing out that Manipuris is not only athletic but are also famous in art and culture, he appealed to them for working for the welfare of their adopted homelands.
He further urged Manipuris not to forget their traditions and preserve the culture so as to make Manipur known by the world.
Meanwhile, PWCS secretary Sinam Deepak informed that around 30,000 Manipuris are residing in Tripura and working to preserve its culture and history.
UCM too helped in the preservation by bringing handloom and handicraft artisans from Manipur.
Moreover, 12 Manipuri students from BPL family of Tripura have been provided free education in Manipur, he added.
Around 30 stalls are exhibiting varied products in the fair.
