Imphal, June 10 2014:
Driver and helper of an inter-State bus operating between Guwahati and Imphal were assaulted at Guwahati ISBT.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, All Manipur Night Super Welfare Association Secretary L Irabot appealed to the State Government to take serious note of the unwarranted assault on the driver and helper and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Drivers and helpers who reached Guwahati from Imphal were having their meals at the Guwahati ISBT at around 8 pm of June 7 when some unidentified persons started pissing and spitting very close to the place where the drivers and helpers were eating.
At this, some of the drivers and helpers told the unidentified persons it was not the proper place for urination and spitting.
Then they left quietly but a few minutes later they came back holding lethal weapons like iron rods, hammers etc and assaulted the drivers as well as the helpers.
Even as the drivers and helpers ran away, they were chased and beaten, Irabot said.
All the while security forces deployed there did not react.
It was only after the arrival of a Sub-Inspector of Assam Police that the injured victims were taken care of.
The injured drivers have been identified Chingtham Biren (50), Ningombam Ratan, Leichonbam Balbir (42), Thokchom Inao (42) and helper Md Yaima.
Saying that similar incidents happened in the past too, the association urged the State Home Minister and the DGP to take up the matter with their Assam counterparts in order to avoid recurrence of such incidents.
