Imphal, June 10 2014:
Demanding befitting punitive action against engineers and contractors responsible for the collapse of an RCC bridge at Keirao Litan Makhong and sinking of another RCC bridge at Kyamgei Pal Ahanbi sometime back, the Education Development and Health Promotion Council (EDAHPCO) has called a 48 hour bandh along Imphal-Moreh highway and Yairipok-Imphal road with effect from 5 am of June 12 .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, EDAHPCO general secretary Dhamendro Heirom despite memoranda submitted to the local MLA, the Works Minister and the Chief Minister to fix accountability and punish the culprits, the Government has not anything visible so far.
Such inaction of the Government compelled the aggrieved public to call bandh.
The bandh would be first limited to Imphal-Yairipok road which passes through Keirao Kendra and Imphal-Moreh highway.
If the Government still fails to move, more intense agitation would be launched, Dhamendro said.
The Government, by keeping the bridge construction works in doldrums, has anguished the people of Imphal East district, particularly people of Keirao A/C.The RCC bridge constructed over Iril river at Keirao Litan Makhong collapsed on February 5 this year in which four labourers sustained injuries.
The western portion of another RCC bridge built over Leishang Hiden canal at Kyamgei Pal Ahanbi which was already completed and put into use sank on July 14, 2012 .
The bridge has not been repaired till date and it lies in an inclined position.
