Imphal, June 10 2014:
A musical instruments gallery and an archaeological gallery were inaugurated at Manipur State Museum today.
Renowned musicologist Laishram Birendrakumar and Art and Culture Commissioner Dr RK Nimai graced the inauguration function as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Nimai said that culture of a community is determined by the activities and day-to-day affairs of the said community but not by dance and music alone.
Saying that Art and Culture Department earlier had a collection of 30 musical instruments, Dr Nimai said that the newly inaugurated gallery would showcase 73 instruments.
Saying that similarities are generally witnessed in the instruments of different communities, Dr Nimai said that these similarities are the indications for sharing a common origin by these communities.
He also urged the general public to bring children in the museum so that they may get the knowledge of their ancestors.
Art and Culture Director K Sobita while speaking at the function said that music is significant part of culture and the newly inaugurated gallery is a treasure trove for cultural elements.
Apart from releasing a guide book of musical instruments and a folder of archaeological gallery, certificates for a 10-day appreciation course were also distributed to the participants at the function.
