Farmers sensitized on Kharif-2014

Imphal, June 10 2014:
A 'one-day within State Farmers' Training Programme on Agriculture & Allied Sectors during Kharif 2014' was organized by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) at conference hall of Directorate of Agriculture at Sanjenthong here on Monday.
Imphal West Deputy Commissioner M Joy Singh, ATMA State Coordinator Y Shyamkishwar Singh, and SAMETI Director M Gojendra Singh attended the opening ceremony of the training programme as members on the dais.
Making a brief speech at the ceremony, M Joy Singh said arable land of the State has been continuously made shrunk as wealthy people have taken over and constructed a lot of structures like houses, small industries, schools and workshops, etc.
He went on to say that population growth is non-stoppable and demand for food increases at the same time, therefore the constant dwindling in the size of agricultural land of the State poses a great threat to the people.
Farmers can play a big role in protecting cultivable lands by not selling their lands to moneyed people, Joy urged and called for pro-active role from the side of the Government towards this end.
Concerning productivity of crops, he emphasized the importance of introduction of new know-how and giving proper training to the farmers to give a boost in the yield level.
The farmers can prosper from agriculture, sericulture, piggery and fishery, provided they get proper knowledge in the fields, said M Gojendra while speaking at the farmers' training programme.
An incentive award of Rs 1.50 lakh is given to every successful farmer in the State besides Rs 50,000 to each successful farmer who takes up fishery, piggery and cultivation of oil-producing plants, sericulture and entrepreneur as well, he mentioned.
The Government is also providing revolving fund amount of Rs 10,000 to women plant growers, Gopendra further informed.
He also stressed on the need for developing agriculture and allied sectors through modern technologies.
In the first session of the training programme, resource person Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh spoke on the topic 'Economically Important Livestock Diseases- Their Treatments and Control Measures' while N Joykumar delivered on the topic 'Innovative Technique of Paddy-cum-Pisciculture in Manipur' .
