Imphal, May 06 2022:
Thangmeiband Watham Leirak which is a major thoroughfare of greater Imphal area has been incorporated in the State Government's 100 days action programme.
Notably, Watham Leirak is now highly dilapidated.
For people living to the northern side of Khongnang Ani Karak, Watham Leirak is a key road for going to major hospitals like RIMS and Shija Hospital.
For them, Watham Leirak serves as a convenient route for going to major Government departments/offices which are located in Thangmeiband and Lamphelpat areas.
For people coming from Imphal East and the northern direction, Watham Leirak serves as a convenient alternative to the busy BT Road and other roads of Khwairamband Keithel for going to Lamphelpat and beyond.

Moreover, VIPs like Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, MLAs and others who have their quarters at Lamphelpat take Watham Leirak for their daily movement.
Despite its significance, Watham Leirak is now highly dilapidated as no maintenance work was done during the past three years.
Nonetheless, the State Government, realising the importance of Watham Leirak, has listed it in the 100 days action plan.
Sources informed that repairing of Watham Leirak would begin within 10 days.
The particular road was damaged very badly when it was dug out for Imphal Sewerage Project during 2013-14 by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) .
Even though PHED repaired the road, it could not be fully restored.
PWD again repaired the road in 2018-19 but it did not last long as it was damaged very badly after a sizeable section was dug out for the sewerage project, said the sources.
Nonetheless, as it has been listed in the Government's 100 days programme, Watham Leirak would be re-constructed properly this time.
Moreover, Watham Leirak has been named among the roads short-listed by the Government for expansion, the sources informed.
Watham Leirak would be expanded to the level of a double-lane road and it would entail land acquisition.
As the road expansion plan entails land acquisition, the same work would take some time before it can materialise, according to the sources.
