Imphal, May 06 2022:
United Committee Manipur (UCM) has submitted a memorandum to chief minister N Biren on Friday urging protection of Manipuri Rajbari (Red Land) in Shillong, Meghalaya as a living historical monument and the MSRTC land plot in Dimapur, Nagaland.
Addressing a press meet at its office on Friday, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam said that the Committee recently organised an expedition to trace Manipuris in other states during which the team found the Manipuri Rajbari in Shillong in deplorable state with the MSRTC plot in Dimapur also in a pitiable condition.
Red Land is an important site for Manipur as it is the place where king Bodhchandra was held captive and forced to sign the infamous merger agreement on September 21, 1949 by the Government of India.
Earlier, there were some issues regarding the plot but due to the initiative by chief minister N Biren, the state government paid Rs 91 lakh to Meghalaya government and took legal ownership of the 81,884 square feet plot, the Joychandra noted.
However, on seeing the deplorable condition of the site / monument, UCM submitted the memorandum and the CM assured to take up necessary steps to develop the monument, he said.
The CM also assured to look into the matter of the MSRTC plot in Dimapur and to renovate the complex with relevant facilities, he said.
Joychandra further said that UCM will organise similar expeditions to Bangladesh and Myanmar.
