Imphal, May 06 2022:
Over 150 volunteers of six student organisations formed a human chain at Kwakeithel on Tiddim Road to show their opposition to the proposal to make Hindi a compulsory subject upto Class X, today.
Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent statement to push Hindi language by making it a compulsory subject has been drawing ire from various organisations and political parties.
The student organisations which staged the protest are AMSU, DESAM, MSF, KSA, AIMS and SUK.
During the demonstration, placards with "Making Hindi a compulsory subject will be a burden to the students", "Make public the stand of the State Government on the issue" and "Respect indigenous languages" messages were used.

Speaking to media persons, DESAM president Leishangthem Lamyanba said that the six student organisations will not accept any move to make Hindi a compulsory subject upto Class X in North East States.
He maintained that the students must be given the liberty to learn Hindi based on their preference and it should never be a compulsion.
Claiming that the Central Government is only attempting to abolish the languages of smaller groups by pushing Hindi, he claimed that the State Government remaining silent and not making its stand clear is wrong and regrettable.
Lamyanba added that Manipuri is included in the eighth schedule of the Constitution and as such the Govt must promote the language.
Unfortunately, the Central Government hasn't done anything worthwhile to promote Manipuri, he rued and urged the State Cabinet to pass State Language Policy in the Monsoon session of the State Assembly.
