Police thwart land acquisition protest

Imphal, July 24 2013:
A team of Imphal East Police fired several tear gas shells to disperse protestors who were holding a sit-in in front of Manipur Mall at Mantripukhri today decrying land acquisition for construction of RBI Regional Office.
Locals of Mantripukhri belonging to different communities started the sit-in-protest from around 7 am.
However, a team of Imphal East Police came to the spot and dispersed the protestors by firing two tear gas shells.
There was no casualty in the police action.
Later, the protestors congregated at the Community Hall near Mantripukhri Keithel and continued their sit-in.
A woman protestor told Hueiyen Lanpao that the State Government should review its decision to acquire land for construction of RBI Regional Office by evicting more than 500 houses at Mantripukhri area.
She also condemned the highhandedness of Imphal East Police who had fired tear gas shells to the peaceful protestors.
The locals have resolved to launch intense agitations if the State Government does not revoke its decision to acquire land for the RBI office.
They further appealed to the authorities concerned to release those people who were apprehended by police in connection with the July 22 agitation.
