Notice issued to crack down on disturbances on NHs

Imphal, September 03 2026: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has stated that a notification has been issued to take up necessary action against those people who create disturbances and obstructions on National Highways.

Replying to a query raised by MLA Th Lokeshwor during question hour in the State Assembly today, the Home Minister said that goods trucks plying on National Highways were given security even before the violent crisis erupted.

A notification has been issued under the National Highway Authority Act 2002 to take up necessary action against those elements creating obstructions or disturbances on National Highways, he said.

The DGP has already instructed all Superintendents of Police to take up action against people creating disturbances on National Highways, Govindas said.

He said that the Government has been making all efforts to see that the National Highways are freed of all kinds of disturbances.

At present, public and private vehicles moving on National Highways are being escorted by security forces.

This arrangement was made in case miscreants attack the vehicles by pelting stones, he said.

There is no restriction on movement of goods and people including both Meitei and Naga communities on NH-37 and NH-02 .

All vehicles are escorted by security forces.

In case, any one creates disturbances or obstructions to movement of people and goods on the highways, befitting actions will be taken up as per law, the Home Minister told the House.

Raising a supplementary question, Lokeshwor pointed out that trucks engaged in transporting essential commodities are still unable to move on NH-2, notwithstanding the Government's claim there is no restriction on movement of goods and services on the highway.

He went on to ask who are those people obstructing movement of vehicles on the National Highway; whether they are terrorists or CSOs.

On the other hand, a large number of goods laden trucks are either stranded or delayed on NH-37.Consequent upon the inability of transporters to move freely on the National Highways, prices of all commodities have spiked to an alarming level, Lokeshwor said.

To another query raised by Lokeshwor regarding the construction of Sawombung-Sagolmang road, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand who is also in charge of Works Department said that no enquiry was ordered into the construction of the particular road nor any action taken.
