Imphal, January 28 2013:
With the Khuga Multipurpose Project failing to ensure irrigation facilities to paddy fields and safe drinking water to the people, Manipur Loumi Lup has termed the project, which was inaugurated by Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 2010, as a complete failure.
In protest against the failure of the project to extend the assured benefits to the people, Manipur Loumi Lup today organized a vehicle rally in and around Khuga Mamang Leikai Shantipur and proceeded till Kumbi.
The rallyists who were led by ex-Minister N Mangi also inspected the main right canal of Khuga Multipurpose Project.
During the rally cum inspection visit, the team witnessed the main right canal in a sorry state.
The canal has never provided any irrigational facilities to the nearby paddy fields nor has it provided safe drinking water to the nearby villages.
On the contrary, construction of the canal has affected many villagers.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the visit, ex-Minister N Mangi, who is in-charge of Manipur Loumi Lup, stated that the Khuga dam which was inaugurated by Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 2010 has become a complete failure today.
The expectation of the villagers to get irrigational facilities to more than one thousand paris of lands have been shattered to pieces.
He further stated that the project on which Rs 335.11 crores had been spent has become useless today.
The idea of generating power from the project has remained not just a dream, but also a curse to the society.
Mangi informed that different forms of democratic agitations would be carried out to demand irrigation facilities.
The matter would also be taken with the Chief Minister along with submitting a memorandum.
The Chairperson of AICC would also be informed and pressed for necessary action in this regard if the State Government fails to solve the problem.
The ex-Minister also highlighted the issue of Loktak Hydro-electric Project which has submerged vast tract of agricultural land.
Furthermore, he mentioned the alleged failure of Imphal Barrage, Sekmai Barrage, Khoupum Dam and Singda Dam to provide irrigational facilities to the farmers of the State.
It is all because of these that the farmers of the State are suffering whenever draught like situation hits the State.
The ex-Minister appealed to the concerned authority to look into the matter and do the needful in the interest of the farming community and asked the State Government to extend pension schemes to farmers who have attained the age of 60 years and above as well.
