The State Government has allotted .78 acre for setting up of a public art gallery.
This was stated by Art and Culture Commissioner Dr RK Nimai while speaking as chief guest at the opening function of a five-day exhibition cum composite artist's workshop held at Manipur State Gallery, Palace Compound today.
The Commissioner expressed hope that the new art gallery would help in nurturing budding artists.
Dr Nimai said that he had urged the Government to give more attention to art and culture.
Encouraging women artists, Dr Nimai observed that the art pieces prepared by female artists have different interpretation comparing to items prepared by their male counterparts.
Saying that lots of improvement could be witnessed in the field of art in the past few years, Dr Nimai assured that the Art and Culture Department would also do the needful to bring more development.
Art and Culture Director Dr K Sobita and Manipur State Kala Akademi Secretary In-Charge S Vedeshwor Sharma were the guests of honour and Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee and senior artist L Shamu Singh was the president of the function.
Dr K Sobita while speaking at the function said, the items which are being showcased in the exhibition have full of innovative ideas.
She opined that the items made of copper and other metals have the potential to attract a huge demand in the market.
Expressing satisfaction in coming out more female artists, Dr Sobita also mentioned about the need collection of selected items for the proposed art gallery.
In his speech, S Vedeshwor Sharma said that an art expo is being proposed to organise soon.
Around 30 artists are taking part in the exhibition cum workshop.
