Demanding fit irrigation facilities for double cropping in a year as well as potable water for the general public, the Manipur Loumi Lup today organised a mass rally in addition to conducting a field inspection of the canals of Loktak Lift Irrigation Project and Khuga Dam.
The mass rally started from Irabot Bhavan and went to different places of Bishnupur district in vehicles adorned with CPI flags where irrigation canals have been constructed but are not functioning.
In the course of the rally, street corner meetings were held at Nambol Bazar, Moirang Lamkhai, Kangvai Bazar, Saiton Bazar, Wangoo Naodakhong and Chairen Mangjil Bazar.
At these meetings, leaders of Manipur Loumi Lup lambasted the State Government for all the irrigation and water supply projects which have to serve their purposes.
The Loumi Lup has been demanding commissioning of the Khuga Dam which was inaugurated by AICC president Sonia Gandhi in 2010, re-modernisation barrages/dams so that water can be provided by irrigation of agricultural fields, provision of potable water and electricity in every part of the State, early completion of Dolaithabi and Thoubal projects and provision of monthly pension of Rs 3000 each to farmers above 60 years of age.
Loumi Lup in-charge and former Minister N Mangi said that Loktak Lift Irrigation project is unable to supply water to Imphal low canal as well as Moirang low canal.
He also demanded re-modernisation of irrigation projects and dams so that there is necessary quantity of water in agricultural fields for double cropping in a year.
The Loumi Lup leaders later observed cracked surface in the right main canal of Khuga dam as no water was released through the canal.
They said that a memorandum highlighting the woes of farmers of the State would be submitted to AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the Government of Manipur.
