Imphal, September 16 2022:
Expressing shock over the dilapidated condition of the two-floor RCC building of Yumnam Huidom High School, Wangoi AC MLA Khuraijam Loken has fumed over the people responsible for the construction work, while giving assurances of either repairing or rebuilding the building.
The construction of the new building was completed in December last year and had been inaugurated as a follow-up to the then cabinet's decision to upgrade Yumnam Huidrom High School to the higher secondary level.
On Thursday morning, MLA Loken inspected the first floor of the building which is now being used as classrooms.
During the inspection, the MLA found that the floors in all of the rooms were cracked.
Any movement or a scratch on the floors would trigger dust to fly up, most of which were found to be piled into heaps at the corners of classrooms.
In this regard, Loken said that he was informed of the building's condition by the locals on his WhatsApp and as such, he decided to visit the school on Thursday.
He expressed shock over the floors' conditions, which is also causing the students to develop respiratory problems.
In addition, the building's condition is so serious that it would not be able to withstand an earthquake and could lead to loss of lives.
Thus, he Urged the teachers not to conduct the classes at the upper floor as much as possible.
Recounting that Yumnam Huidrom High School was covered under the state government's School Fag-athansi Mission' due to its exemplary performance, the MLA said that the building was constructed under this initiative and inaugurated in December last year.
To see the building in such a state within less than a year of its inauguration is not only shocking but shows dereliction of duty on part of some machineries of the government.
The matter would not have come to this State if the engineering cell or officials of the department concerned had paid attention during the construction process.
Thus, the matter will be taken up to the Chief Minister and the education minister to determine which agency or contractor was responsible for the project.
Furthermore, if needed, the building will be rebuilt, he said, while adding that the locals also have the responsibility of looking after the school for it is a public property.
Later, MLA Loken visited the Health and Wellness Centre, Irom Meijrao.
The building of the centre had cracks in many places and also lacked electric connection.
As such, he assured of funding the expenses for the electricity connection out of his own pocket.
Loken then said that the Hiyangthang-Irom Meijrao road is in poor condition.
Although there are some funds under PMGSY, it is not enough for the repair.
Thus, he said that he will make up the deficit from his LADF so as to commence the work from Friday and ensure its completion be fore the Bor festival.
Expansion of all IVRs in the constituency has also been initiated, he conveyed.
