Imphal, September 16 2022:
The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) has urged all clubs, meira paibi lups and organisations to support its movement by staging a democratic protest demonstration at their respective localities so as to make the Government aware about the urgency to grant some sort of Constitutional protection to Meetei/Meitei and secure the future of the ethnic group.
In a statement, the STDCM said that they carried out a sit in protest at Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai in collaboration with the local club and the protesters collectively agreed to intensify the movement demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for Meetei/Meitei by imposing general strikes or launching harsher modes of agitation if the Government continues to remain silent on the matter.
Notably, the STDCM has already warned that they will have no other options than to intensify its movement from the second half of October if the Government doesn't give any positive response by then.
After resuming its movement on August 26 last, the STDCM has been urging the State Government to send the recommendations sought by the Centre to enlist the Meetei/Meitei in the ST list of the Indian Constitution by staging democratic demonstrations at different localities.
The local club of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai also has agreed to extend unconditional support to the future endeavours of STDCM.
The STDCM appealed to all local clubs, meira paibi lups and organisations to carry out a democratic protest till October 20 .
