Chingmeirong school condemns firing of tear gas

Chingmeirong Upper Primary School has strongly condemned firing of tear gas shells by the police within the school premises in connection with the eviction drive taken up by SDC Heingang, Imphal East district in Chingmeirong.
In a release, School's head mistress N Shantila Devi recounted that on September 14, a huge crowd had gathered in front of the school and there was some conflict between the crowd and po lice forces.
Because of the volatile situation and possible disruption, ZEO Zone II, AI and DI concerned were immediately informed of the situation and the students were sent back home for safety as per their advice.
The teachers were compelled to stay back as the faculty feared loss of school property due to the legal dispute, it added.
The release also claimed that between 11:30 am and 12 noon, tension escalated and the police began firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd with several shells also landing in the school campus.
Many protestors ran inside the school premises for cover during which numerous teachers also suffered in the process.
Owing to the incident, students of the schools did not turn up the next day due to fear of unwanted incident causing disruption to the daily school/academic schedule on Thursday also, it added.
The release also appealed to all concerned to respect the sanctity of the school and to reach a quick, permanent and peaceful solution, so that the students can attend the school without any fear.
"We urge everyone involved not to put the school, the entire staff and the students in harm's way," it further said.
