2 AR jawans, 1 UG killed, 1 injured in Ukhrul Dist ambush

Imphal, March 31 2015 :
Two personnel of 44 Assam Rifles including a Havildar and a suspected underground cadre were killed, and one Junior Commissioned Officer was hurt in a reported encounter that occurred at a place between Kamsong and Konkan under Ukkhrul district near Indo-Myanmar border early on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 5.50 am at the spot which falls under Chasad Police Station, according to police sources.
A gun battle ensued between a road opening party of the 44 AR and a group of heavily armed underground cadres who first ambushed the security team by exploding a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was followed by an indiscriminate firing.
Konkan is located about 30 km from Chasad Police Station.
The exchange of fire lasted for about 2 hours, they said, adding two AR personnel including a Havildar and one underground cadre were killed, and one Naib Subedar was injured in the encounter.
The dead were identified as Havildar Kshetri and rifleman Doly but the identity of the underground cadre is yet to be ascertained.
The injured Naib Subedar was identified as B Shanta.
He was airlifted to Leimakhong Military Hospital for treatment.
Additional forces rushed to the site and conducted search to nab the assailants but they managed to escape, the sources said.
Meanwhile, suspected underground cadres hurled and exploded one hand grenade at the residence of a special contractor at Kyamgei Maning Leikai in Imphal East under Irilbung Police Station around 7:20 pm, but the blast did not cause casualties.
The grenade exploded just inside the residential gate of special contractor Brojendro (50).A car parked near the gate was partly damaged in the blast, police said.
The police are investigating the incident.
