Imphal, March 31 2015 :
Asserting that construction of Mapithel Dam has violated international laws, UN Declaration on Indigenous People's Right 2007 and Article 21 of the Constitution of India, the United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNMM) has urged the Government of Manipur as well as Government of India stop construction of Mapithel Dam immediately.
Even though the State Government promised to generate 7.5 MW of electricity, provide water to agricultural land and drinking water to people settled at the upstream and downstream portion of Mapithel Dam, the same promise is unlikely to see the light of day ever if one goes by the past records/experiences of other dams, said a press release issued by the UNMM.
It cited the cases of Khuga Dam, Khoupum Dam and Singda Dam which, according to them, have miserably failed to serve their stated purposes.
