UKHRUL: Commemorating the passion, crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ on the Friday a day before Easter Sunday, various churches in Ukhrul town as in other parts of the world, organized solemn prayer and fasting programs on Good Friday.
Major Churches of different denominations in the township like the Baptist, Roman Catholic and Seventh Day Adventist were seen conducting morning worship services till around 9:30 am as first session at their respective churches which were crammed-full of believers.
During the second session, some churches held solemn prayer and fasting services at their respective churches while some other church congregations proceeded towards the cemetery where they mourned the Lord's death through prayer and fasting which continued till 2 pm.
"Good Friday is truly a special day in the lives of Christians and it is only fitting that we acknowledge His supreme sacrifice by devoting ourselves to prayerful worshiping," said a religious activist Ragui who attended the noon fast at Hunphun Baptist Church.
As part of the observance, different preachers discoursed upon the Gospel teachings of Christ, while short plays depicting the final moments of His life on earth were also enacted.
Significantly, a typical air of sadness prevailed across the township even as majority of residents forwent their morning meals as penance and churches were left devoid of any special decorations signifying mourning.
