Manipur records low rainfall in last few years

Imphal, April 03 2015 : Manipur has been recording 'very low' rainfall in the past few years.

As per statistics available with the Manipur Directorate of Environment and other institutes related with weather, the rainfall depth in the State had reduced in the last few years.

The State recorded a total rainfall rate of 1725.7 mm during 2010, 1539.1mm in 2011 and 1328.2 mm in 2012.But the rainfall rate jumped down to 858.4 mm in 2013. The major drop in the rainfall rate has a far reaching impact and that it has caused dry spell and acute shortage of water in the State during summer, an expert said.

He however, acknowledged the fact that the oscillation in rainfall rate is a global phenomenon.

He said though Manipur has experienced a low rainfall in the past few years, the depth is still higher compared to other States of the country.

The expert also disclosed that Rajasthan is getting only 500 mm rainfall on average annually and hence Manipur will not face water scarcity during dry season if proper plans are taken up, the expert suggested.

He stressed the need to develop water bodies and to preserve forests in casement areas.

DESAM demands water policy
The acute shortage of water is recurring phenomenon in Manipur.

However the government has formulated a water policy to overcome the shortage.

Despite protests from the people the government has not chalked a lasting plan.

Instead the government has been resorting to giving assurances from time to time.

DESAM is organising a public meeting at the riverbed of the Imphal river on April 5 .
