'Jewel of Manipuri Cinema' to Syam

Renowned filmmaker and Padmashree awardee Aribam Syam Sharma was today conferred with the award, 'Jewel of Manipuri Cinema' by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi at a function held at the auditorium of Manipur State Film Deve-lopment Society (MSFDS) today.
The function was organized by Film Forum Manipur in association with Manipur State Film Development Society.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1,01,000, a shawl, a citation and a memento.
Okram Ibobi graced the function as the chief guest while Film Forum Manipur chairman Laimayum Surja-kanta was the functional president.
Secretary (Arts and Culture) Kangjam Radhakumar and MSFDS secretary Dr K Sushila were also present at the occasion as the guests of honour.

Speaking at the function, Ibobi said that Manipur is well known all over the world for its arts and culture, and film is one of the important aspects of it.
He added that films can be used as an important medium to change people's outlook.
Stating that although the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has decided to set up a film institute in Manipur, the process has been delayed due to some reasons.
With an aim to extend support to film artists and other persons working in film related works, the Government in consultation with the experts would institute a corpus fund.
Aribam Syam Sharma said that films in Manipur is just 43 years old and the State has experienced a tremendous progress.
Later, the cash award of Rs 1,01,000 that he received today was donated to a trust which is to be set up very soon for film artists and technicians.
A booklet was also released by the dignitaries at the function.
