Rape case disposed off

After the death of accused S Ngaopuni on May 7 last, special POCSO Judge of Manipur East today disposed off the rape case of a minor girl.
However, the Court directed the State Government to provide a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the alleged rape survivor.
Family members of the minor girl were present at the Court during today's proceeding.
An application was submitted by the father of the girl seeking interim compensation for immediate rehabilitation as the accused had died before the completion of the trial.
The victim's counsel also pleaded the Court to treat the application under Rule 7 (2) of POCSO for awarding final compensation.
The counsel further told the Court that as per the medical examination reports, there are signs of sexual assault on the girl and she had already deposed before the Court that she was raped by the accused.
The counsel further said that the girl is still reeling under trauma and she requires frequent counselling.
The counsel also prayed for adequate compensation for proper rehabilitation of the girl.
Later, the Court directed the State Government to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the girl under Rule 7 (2) of POCSO rules within 30 days.
The compensation amount must be deposited in a bank as fixed deposit till the girl attains 18 years.
The Court was informed about the demise of accused S Ngoupuni alias Ngaopuni s/o (L) Seiba of Liyai Khullen at present Paomei Colony on May 7 by the authority of Sajiwa Central jail.
The jail authority submitted Ngaopuni's death certificate issued by Department of Forensic Medicine, JNIMS to the Court on May 12 .
Ngaopuni died after he allegedly jumped down from a water reservoir tower inside Sajiwa Central jail on May 7 .
