State police now capable of cracking e-mail IDs of UGs

Following suit of top agencies in the country such as National Investigation Agency (NIA), State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in dealing with cyber crimes, Manipur Police is all set to open its Cyber Crime Cell within this week, DIG Range-I Clay Khongsai told Huieyen Lanpao.
Even if DIG Clay Khongsai refused to disclose the details, another reliable source revealed that Manipur Police are now capable of cracking email IDs and websites of underground outfits.
He further said that the number of cyber crime cases is gradually increasing in the State.
The absence of a Cyber Crime Cell is a setback for the Police Department to deal with cyber crimes and maintain proper record of such cases, Clay noted.
The top officials of Manipur Police including SPs of Imphal East and Imphal West have deliberated on the issue of tackling cyber crimes in the State.
Cyber Crime Cell would be opened up in Imphal East and Imphal West District Police within this week.
The Department has already taken the advice of DGP Y Joykumar and some police personnel having expertise in computers and internet would also be requisitioned for the Cell, he disclosed.
The DIG went on to highlight that the Police have found evidences of hacking, cyber terrorism, pornography, piracy and several other cyber crimes in the State.
Cyber crime has been listed as the cause for certain sensitive issues in the State and so the Police Department is prepared to thwart such crimes.
The most common form of cyber crime in the State is pornography.
It has been regarded by many as the main factor for arousing men's sexual desire and thereof leading to sex crimes against women.
The first priority of the Cyber Crime Cell of Manipur Police would be prevention of pornography.
Sharing of adult videos among people is also a form of cyber crime according to Information Technology Act.
Moreover, the owners who are running cyber cafes without fulfilling the regulations of Government can also be booked under IT Act.
There have been many instances in which some people uploaded objectionable pictures over social networking sites with a motive to tarnish the image of innocent people, especially girls.
In the past, thousands of people had also lost crores of rupees on ponzi schemes such as Jainex, Visarev, Unipay, Global Wing Index, etc.
It may be noted that Manipur Police has recently launched a drive to check pornographic pictures and videos in mobile phones among youths.
Hundreds of youths have been arrested by police and counselled them in presence of their parents.
A computer geek told Hueiyen Lanpao that cyber crimes comprise all criminal activities done through the medium of internet using computers, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets.
The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 is the cyber law of the country.
Persons involved in cyber crimes can be imprisoned and fined under the provisions of IT Act.
Another source also revealed that there is a racket for distributing pirated DVDs and CDs and circulating pornographic videos among mobile users in the State.
