Imphal, July 11 2013:
The proscribed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) has called for people's support to stop increasing crime and violence against women in the State.
A statement issued by Publicity Secretary of RPF Roben Khuman said that the assimilation of Hindu culture in the social system of Manipur has led to the degradation of society with tremendous decrease in gender justice.
It is a matter of serious concern that crime and violence against women have soared up drastically in the last few years with continual breaches of moral codes of the society.
Gruesome crime of rape and murder, kidnapping, molestation, human trafficking etc.
are engulfing the Manipuri society.
There were 251 cases of crime and violence against women in 2012 known to the public.
Those cases included 21 rape cases, 16 cases of rape and murder, seven cases of molestation, one case of immolation, 56 missing cases, three cases of disbandment, 78 trafficking cases and 41 cases of severe thrashing, the RPF highlighted.
The total number of cases of violence against women in the State as reported in the local newspapers from 2005 to 2012 was 1007.Similarly, more than two lakh such cases occurred all over India as per the National Crime Bureau report for 2010 .
Large number of cases of crime and violence against women in India has indeed shown the ineffectiveness of its legal system to protect women, the RPF said in the statement.
The women of Manipur are now in a critical situation under the colonial rule of the Indians.
The situation would not be improved unless the people are relieved of the Indian colonial mindsets, the statement added.
