2nd Enviro Youth Summit concludes

With the primary objective of creating awareness among students about environmental issues and nature conservation, the Second Enviro Youth Summit of Manipur was held on May 5-6, at Lamyanba Sanglen, Palace Compound, here .
The summit was organised by the North East Centre for Environmental Education and Research (NECEER) .
Many eminent personalities, scientists, academicians and young students thronged the summit in large number.
Dr RK Ranjan, former Registrar, Manipur University graced the occasion as the chief guest, G Tomba Sharma former Principal, DM College of Science and Salam Anil Kumar Singh, National Teacher Awardee(CBSE) were the guests of honour and Khuraijam Jibankumar Singh, founder and Managing Trustee, NECEER was the president of the event.
More than 100 students participated in the said summit.
As a part of the summit, various competitions were held such as painting competition (Std.
I-VI), symposium (VII-XII), short story writing (BA/B.Sc) and the like.
In the second day, the summit witnessed 'Nature walk at the Kangla Fort' guided by Hemchand, Dept.
of Botany, DM College of Science and screening of Environmental films, directed by RK Robindro and Ashish Hamom.
James Mayengbam of Manipur Cycling Club, Dr.K Manibhushan, Head, Dept.
of Environmental Science, DM College of Science and Meena Bhushan, a member of Bhaktivedanta Institute, Kolkata gave thought-provoking lectures on environment.
Young Green Awards were conferred upon the winners of the various competitions held as parts of the youth summit.
21 merit awards were awarded to the winning participants and two special mention awards were also conferred upon as well.
The event culminated with Khuraijam Jibankumar thanking everyone including sponsors, partners, students, parents, guardians, media among others.
He also urged the youths to be more active in conserving environment and biodiversity of Manipur.
The Youth Summit was aimed at encouraging students to study environmental issues of the state and nurture leadership qualities.
Next rounds of the summit would be organised in all the districts in phase-wise manner every year.
Next year, the summit would be held at Bishnupur.
Starting its enviro awareness campaign, the NECEER held its Enviro Lecture Series in the DM College of Science and the Central Agricultural University in Manipur, as a pre-event of the Enviro Youth Summit of Manipur 2013 in association with the said reputed institutions.
Dr Narendra Singh, Scientist at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorological, Pune, conducted a lecture on 'Summer Monsoon and Global Warming' to a packed conference room of students as well as teachers.
The NECEER also held an environmental awareness campaign at Cheirao Ching, Thangmeiband on the auspicious day of Cheiraoba.
The summit is first of its kind in Northeast India and is being organized to celebrate United Nation's International Decade of Biodiversity 2010-2020.NECEER, Imphal is one of the 14 official partners of UN's International Decade of Biodiversity 2010-2020 in India.
