Imphal, August 09 2026: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated that it's time for the Congress party to launch a sustained mass movement like the Quit India Movement in order to save Manipur.

Ibobi made this statement at the 84th Quit India Movement Day observation held at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today.

Many Congress MLAs, former MLAs, former Ministers and MPCC office bearers attended the commemorative event and paid floral tributes to the leaders of Quit India Movement and other freedom fighters.

The gathering also swore Unity Pledge collectively.

Speaking at the function, O Ibobi called upon Congress workers and all sections of people to recall the contributions made by the Congress party in the country's freedom struggle, and work collectively to safeguard the future of Manipur.

The former Chief Minister asserted that no other political party can save India and Manipur except the Congress party.

Like the freedom fighters of the past who fought against British rule with the indomitable spirit of "do or die", all Congress workers should have the same courage and commitment to save Manipur, Ibobi said.

He said that the underlying essence of paying floral tributes to the freedom fighters is protecting the freedom won by them and handed down to the present generation.

Even though India had achieved freedom, it is now highly questionable whether the people are truly free, whether the Constitution is complied with or whether there is freedom of speech and expression in Manipur, the former Chief Minister said.

He also asked whether the relevant Constitutional provisions are enforced in Manipur to maintain law and order.
