Mala Lisham case : Thoubal PS stormed

Even as Thoubal police claimed to have arrested a police personnel involved in attacking Thoubal CWC Chairperson, Mala Lisham, womenfolk in large number today stormed Thoubal PS demanding stringent punishment against the culprit.
Police however informed the agitating women that the assailant, a police man with Imphal West police, has been in their custody and interrogation is going on.
Earlier in the day, a sit-in protest against the reported life attempt on Mala Lisham, Chairperson of CWC, Thoubal was staged today at the Thoubal Haokha Community Hall.
At the end of the sit-in protest that was organised by JAC against the murder attempt of Mala Lisham, the participants stormed Thoubal PS demanding immediate arrest of the culprit.
The agitating women were pacified by SDPO of Yairipok PS who informed them that the assailant said to be involved in the attack has been arrested by the police.
Yairipok SDPO M Meghachandra said that one Md Basir Ahmad of Hiyangthang Tarahei was arrested by the police in connection with the attack of Mala Lisham.
Md Basir is presently attached with the Narcotic Cell of Imphal West police.
The vehicle (i-10 car) driven by Basir at the time of the occurrence of the incident has also been recovered from him, the SDPO said while adding that interrogation has been going on.
It may be mentioned that Mala Lisham was attacked on May 4 while she was going to Thoubal from Imphal in a car to attend a meeting convened by the Thoubal DC.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by Social Action Development Organisation (SADO) Heirok Part-I Mayai Leikai has strongly condemned the involvement of State Security personnel in the attack while demanding proper probe into the matter.
WAD also strongly condemned the uncivilized act of the police personnel in attacking Mala Lisham.
A statement issued by WAD today said that the need arises to probe whether the gun used by the accused is issued by the Government for the protection of the public.
On the other hand, WAD also lauded the action of Thoubal Police for their timely intervention by arresting the accused Md Bashir Ahmad within a short span.
It added that Mala is one of the few persons working tirelessly against all odds for the cause and welfare of the children of Manipur while also maintaining that it is very unfortunate that the one who is active to save many lives herself became the victim.
