Imphal, February 13, 2013:
Dismayed over lukewarm action against those erring security personnel involved in assaulting journalists in several past incidents, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) is all set to fight in the law court to seek strict action against the Havildar of 1st IRB who assaulted senior reporter Aribam Chaoba of Imphal Free Press near Kangla Northern Gate on the night of February 10 .
Talking to media persons today, President of AMWJU Wangkhemcha Shyamjai said that the assault of a working journalist by some security personnel is quite condemnable.
Similar incidents of assaulting journalists by security personnel had happened many times in the past.
The journalists simply pleaded to the State Government and Police to take strict action against those erring personnel, but those offenders have been not given any befitting punishment rather being placed under suspension for just few months.
Unlike the previous incidents, the AMWJU would not seek any help from the Government.
The Union would fight in the law court to seek strict action against the accused Havildar Md Mujibur Rahman of 1st IRB.
He could be jailed for seven years with fine for his offences under section 225, 506 and 34 of IPC, he noted.
The case has also been forwarded to Press Council of India (PCI), Indian Journalists' Union and other journalists' bodies to get full justice this time, Shyamjai added.
Meanwhile, senior journalist Ratan Luwangcha would take over the charge of Vice-President of AMWJU after the incumbent VP A Dilip retired from the post on health ground.
A Bhakta has also been appointed as a member of the Standing Committee of the Union.
VP Ratan Luwangcha would raise the problems faced by the journalists of the State at the executive meeting of Indian Journalists' Union (IJU) to be held at Bangalore from March 1 to 3 next month.
