Imphal, January 23 2014 :
Accusing privately run Raj Polyclinic, North AOC management of medical negligence resulting in physical disability caused to a girl patient, the patient's parents through an NGO called Namdilong Women Development Society, Kanglatongbi Bazar are demanding Rs 20 lakh compensation to the girl.
Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today, Society president Th Priscilla said eight years old Sushmita Rai d/o Sarat and Aliang Rai of Kanglatongbi was brought to Raj Polyclinic with head injury, suffered from an accidental fall, on January 10, 2013 .
The clot in the head was removed but in the course of the treatment, due to the clinic's negligence both the girl's legs were burnt to such an extent that she lost all her toes and is now rendered disabled, said the president.
Providing further details on the alleged negligence leading to the girl losing her toes, Priscilla said after surgery conducted by one Dr Motilal Singh Sushmita was put in the ICU for two days with none of the girl's parents or relatives allowed to enter the ICU.
When the parents were eventually informed about the girl's toes being roasted due to accidental contact with a heating device some heated arguments ensued between the patient party and Clinic authorities.
After a few days of discharge the patient party approached Legal Aid clinic, a unit of Manipur Legal Services Authority (Cheirap court) consequent to which an understanding was reached with Raj Polyclinic February 2, 2013 under which the private medical centre agreed further treatment of the girl.
Inspite of the agreement the clinic management levelled serious charge against the patient party that quacks were consulted for slow dead of Sushmita in order to blame the clinic and demand monetary compensation, claimed Priscilla.
stating that Sushmita is not only unable to walk but has telltale signs of mental disorientation apparently due to impact from the shocking experience at the clinic's ICU, she asserted that the clinic pay compensation amount of Rs 20 lakh for physical deformities caused to the young girl.
The fact that Sushmita would be needing another major operation on attaining 15 years of age further justify the parents' demand for monetary compensation, maintained the Society president.
Despite insisting that the Clinic extend the financial assistance at the earliest, Sushmita's parents present at the media briefing declared that their daughter would never be treated at the North AOC clinic.
