Imphal, December 04 2022:
Commissioner of Art and Culture M Joy has appealed to all performers of Sankirtana to keep the art form in its original structure and form while performing at marriage ceremonies and other rituals.
The 2nd Sankirtana Day was jointly observed by the Department of Art and Culture and Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) at the premises of the latter.
At the observance, M Joy continued that there were instances of people performing Sankirtana differently and for longer periods and the same is not encouraging as the art form may lose its originality if the practice continues.
Saying that such changes make the performance of Sankirtana incomplete to watch and guests to offer money improperly, M Joy maintained that this impropriety will not be seen if the Sankirtana is performed in its original form.
He further maintained that Sankirtana was inscribed in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO in 2013 .
Art and Culture Director L Keshorjit, Deputy Director G Dharmadas, JNMDA Director P Bilas and Sankirtana Guru L Lakpati Singh also attended the programme.
A similar observance was also held at Bamon Kampu Mayai Leikai.
