A five-year old boy who was bitten by a dog some three/four months back died yesterday at around 8 am.
Sanasam Monty s/o Sanasam Kabichandra and Sanasam (O) Thoi of Wangoo Ahallup Makha Leikai, Bishnupur district was bitten twice by two puppies.
However, the child was not given any anti-rabies injection and he did not show any sign of health problems for a long time.
But on November 13, the child complained of acute backache and pain in the thigh.
The child was treated at Moirang CHC and discharged.
As Monty became unwell again on November 16, he was taken to Wangoo Laipham CHC and then to Imphal.
As his condition deteriorated on the way to Imphal, he was taken to Bishnupur District Hospital.
From there, he was taken to Mothers' Care Children Hospital and Research Centre, Sagolband in an ambulance.
Even though Monty did not show much changes in his health conditions after he was bitten by the dogs, he had difficulty in drinking water and he became averse to warm clothes and was aquaphobic.
On November 29, Monty's blood sample was sent to NIMHANS Hospital, Bangalore.
The result received on December 1 showed excess presence of rabies virus.
The kid succumbed to the viral infection at around 8 am yesterday at Mothers' Care Children Hospital and Research Centre.
Another four-year old child who was also bitten by a dog on the same day as Monty is not showing any sign of health problems till date.
It is said that the child was given three doses of anti-rabies injection.
The puppies which bit Monty had bitten four people including two owners.
Another dog bit four persons on a single day at Wangoo Parking about a month back but the dog was killed on the same day.
Till last week, there were around 19 cases of dog bites in and around Wangoo Ahallup Makha Leikai.
Some of the victims are children.
Of all the dogs which had bitten human beings, some three/four are now untraceable.
Expressing serious concern over the unfolding situation, many people of Wangoo Ahallup have sought immediate attention of the authorities concerned.
They also expressed keen desire to equip the health care centres of the area with adequate infrastructure, manpower and medicines.
Sanasam Kabichandra has also appealed to the authorities concerned to take up necessary measures on war footing to check spread of rabies in Wangoo Ahallup and surrounding areas.
He also conveyed gratitude to the management of Mothers' Care Children Hospital and Research Centre for giving him a discount of Rs 1,16,545 out of the total bill of Rs 2,39,545 apart from waiving off hospital charges for nine days.
It is said that Kabichandra is a bricklayer while Thoi is a housewife.
