Imphal, September 24 2021:
The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibee Apunba Manipur and All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) have pledged that they will take part in any public movement that seek justice for Athuan Abonmai who was killed after abduction from a high security zone in Tamenglong on September 22 by armed miscreants.
In a joint statement, the associations also demanded the State Government to arrest and reward befitting punishment on the 'killers'.
Even though arresting the perpetrators may take time, the Government should at least announce the name of the group behind the brutal act at the earliest, the statement said.
Claiming that the killing of Athuan Abonmai is a message to the State Government as well as the public that the place from where Abonmai was abducted is not under the control of the Government, the associations claimed that Abonmai was supposedly murdered for his stance for the unity of Manipur.
He (Abonmai) was a rare leader brave enough to speak against those who attempted to create issues in the State by raising unfeasible demands.
Claiming that the killing of Abonmai is a clear indication that there are elements which are scheming to disintegrate the State, it asserted that they are ready to face any challenge that targets the State's integrity.
The apparent abduction of Athuan Abonmai from a high security zone is another message that the State Government is incapable of doing anything against them (the killers), it claimed and urged the Government to take action against everyone involved.
It further urged the Government to announce a cash reward for those who can provide information for the killers.
The killers of Athuan Abonmai should be arrested at all cost, the statement said.
Reiterating that the State police seemed to be helpless in the viral video which showed the abduction of Abonmai in broad daylight, it asked if the security forces are being deployed just as decorative pieces in hill areas or to maintain law and order.
