Governor bats for traditional arts, crafts

Governor Anusuiya Uikey has categorically stated that a collective effort is needed to preserve handicrafts, traditional arts, dance and music of the State and also create a conducive environment for cultural traditions and practices to flourish.
The Governor made the remarks while attending the award distribution ceremony of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), Manipur at the open air theatre of the institute, today.
The award distribution was also attended by Chorus Repertory Theatre Chairman Dr Ratan Thiyam and JNMDA Director P Bilash as functional president and guest of honour respectively.
The award recipients were Anupama Devi ( winner of Savita Ben Mehta and Khukhu Sarkar Gold Medals 2022-23), Khumukcham Sandhya Devi (winner of Lourembam Tombi Gold Medal 2022-23) and Oinam Madanmohan (winner of Rajyapal Gold Medal 2022-23) .
Certificates were also distributed to select students of the institute.
As a part of the function, a play christened Natambakta was showcased.
Speaking at the function, the Governor continued that JNMDA is a premier dance academy of the country established in 1954 .
Saying that JNMDA has produced many eminent artists/artistes such as Padmashrees Guru Meisnam Amubi Singh, Guru Haobam Atomba Singh, Guru T Amudon Sharma, Guru RK Kebisana Devi and Guru Thiyam Tarunkumar Singh, among others, Anusuiya expressed hope that the institute will strive for the best in Manipuri culture.
Manipur is rich in culture and art but unfortunately the State is economically backward, she added.
The Governor went on to state that it is necessary to provide exposure opportunities and ensure conducive conditions for the artisans and craftspersons who keep the traditions alive.
