Manipur reign supreme at NE Games, emerge overall champs with 52 gold

Manipur emerged overall champions at the 3rd North East Games 2024 in Nagaland as the state swept the board in tennis and won the gold medal in men's football competition on the final day of the Games on Saturday.
The state amassed 52 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze medals over the course of the five-day North East gala sports event, demonstrating outstanding success.
Manipur's tennis players reigned supreme at the North Games by scooping all the five gold medals on offer on the closing day.
They dished out stellar performances to make a clean sweep in the men's and women's singles, doubles and team events.
In the men's singles event, Haobam Bushan pulled off a 6-2, 6-4 win over Khate Vilasier of Nagaland in their gold-medal match.
Luikham Jennifer, on the other hand, clinched the gold medal in the women's singles event after making short work of Assam's Borgohain Justina 6-0, 6-0 in the final.
In the doubles event, the state pair of Haobam Bushan and Sagolshem Bhicky received a walkover in the final for the gold medal, while Luikham Jennifer and Nongmeikapam Charmie teamed up to beat the Assamese pair of Kumari Tania and Prajapati Soni 6-3, 7-6 (3) in their summit clash.
Manipur's other gold medal came courtesy of the team event where the state squad outplayed Nagaland by a 2-0 margin in the final.
The state men's football team too enjoyed a memorable day as they scripted a remarkable comeback to defeat Mizoram 2-1 on their way to the gold medal.
In a keenly contested final match, Mizoram took the lead when Isaak converted in the 41st minute, heading to the second half.
Manipur made it all square with an effort from Deny Singh who found the back of the net in the 74th minute, before Sanathoi was on target in the 88th min ute, and that goal eventually turned the tide in favour of the state side.
In belt wrestling, Manipur claimed one gold medal, three silver and two bronze medals.
Moirangthem Sanathoi Singh secured the gold medal in the -90kg category.
The silver medallists were Laishram Chitambala Devi (-65kg), Longjam Nganthoi Chanu (-55kg) and Longjam Lipson Singh (-70kg), while Thomas Laishram (-80kg) and Thoudam Priyananda Singh (-70kg) settled for bronze medals.

Hosts Nagaland secured the second spot with 48 gold, 42 silver and 44 bronze medals, while Assam finished third with 43 gold, 44 silver and 53 bronze medals, followed by Mizoram (16 gold, 15 silver, 27 bronze), Arunachal Pradesh (8 gold, 12 silver, 27 bronze), Sikkim (5 gold, 7 silver, 19 bronze), Meghalaya (2 gold, 12 silver, 41 bronze) and Tripura (1 gold, 4 silver, 11 bronze) .
