Imphal, March 23 2024:
At least eight houses including one shop and a store-room were reduced to cinders in a devastating fire that broke out around 1.30am Saturday at Churachandpur New bazar near the old cinema hall.
Though exact cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained, locals suspected that electric short circuit could have ignited the inferno first detected inside '100 Store', a part of the Zathanga house, and spread to nearby houses.
Another source said that the raging fire was seen by caretakers of a public toilet located nearby and raised alert in the locality by clanking electric pole.
Accordingly, local people came out to douse the fire and called the fire tenders.
As joint efforts of locals and fire tenders to put out the fire remained unsuccessful, fire tenders of Assam Rifles and private water tankers rushed in and joined in controlling the fire.
Fire tenders from Singhat were also called in with the joint efforts finally bringing the fire under control around 7.30 am.
People from Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang, Headquarter Veng, Central Lamka, Zenhang Lamka, New Lamka, D Phailian and from different localities rushed to the area and did their best to put the fire under control.
It is estimated that properties worth around Rs 5 crore have been completely destroyed by the fire.
Meanwhile, PRO IGAR (S) informed that teams of Assam Rifles helped the locals and fire service personnel in controlling the inferno at Churachandpur town.
Stating that the wind caused the fire to spread to two other houses nearby, the PRO maintained that Assam Rifles rushed to the incident site with water bowser and fire-fighting equipment and carried out fire-fighting after evacuating the residents.
Assam Rifles also helped avert a major fire incident at Keipam village, Tengnoupal district on Saturday.
A major fire broke out in one of the houses at Keipam (Molnoi, Pallel), around 1.20 pm on Saturday.
The villagers urgently sought assistance from Assam Rifles, who rushed to the spot with water bowsers and other equipment and doused the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby houses, added the PRO.
