Imphal, July 15 2010:
Following a threat meted out allegedly by the Kuki National Army (KNA) on the leaders of Meitei Council, Moreh (MCM) on July 13, an indefinite bandh has been imposed along the Imphal-Moreh sector of the National Highway 39 since early morning today.
Talking to mediapersons about the whole issue at the Manipur Press Club here today, representatives of the MCM informed that the Moreh town bordering Myanmar was shut down with the residents staying indoors during the past 13 hours.
The leaders of MCM further disclosed as the KNA failed to clarify over the threat episode meted out to the MCM office bearers before 5 am of July 15, the imposed bandh will not be lifted along the Imphal-Moreh section of the national highway but will continue indefinitely.
The MCM leaders also pointed out that the Moreh town has been inhabited by 9 communities with the Kukis as a majority followed by Meitei community.
There has been an increased in the migration from the other side of the border ( Myanmar side) and the influx has created another law and order problem in the border town, rued the MCM leaders.
The leaders also alleged that those refugees coming from Myanmar side has created many unwanted activities, adding "The 31 Assam Rifles, 7 Manipur Rifles (MR) and the Manipur police out posts at Moreh failed to deliver any goods and measurement to ensure safety for the inhabitants".
"The government of Manipur should strictly maintained the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Kuki underground groups as some of the groups have already broken the ground rules by moving with arms openly instead of staying within the designated camps, the MCM alleged.
"Unless the state government takes up some concrete steps, occurring riots in the near future are possible", warned the MCM leaders.
The migration officer stationed at Moreh town also needs to look seriously over the influx problem from across the border, the leaders suggested.
The MCM leaders then accused that the Kuki National Army (KNA) has killed many civilians including student leaders, masons, carpenters and one of MCM members in the last few years.
