Imphal, March 06 2024:
Reacting against the allegations levelled by Manipur Users' Collective (MUC) of some private drug rehabilitation centres rounding up drug pushers and forcibly-putting them in the rehabilitation centres with help of armed individuals, Union of Treatment and Rehabilitation of Users for Social Transformation (U-TRUST) has demanded MUC to reveal the particular centres which involved in such unethical activities rather than wrongly portraying the entire private drug treatment centres.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, U-TRUST publicity secretary H Keshorchand said that MUC on February 4 organised a press conference where some drug user victims were paraded before the media claiming that they were detained and made to stay in drug rehabilitation centres without their consent.
Such allegations which tarnish reputation of privately rehabilitation centres is uncalled for and condemnable, Keshorchand said, adding that U-TRUST views such unfounded charges as a humiliation.
Even if such acts are committed by one or two centres, it is very unfortunate on the part of MUC to generalise the matter and blame all privately fun drug rehabilitation centres of committing the unwanted acts, he said, while adding that this is not the first instance of privately run drug treatment centres being targeted.
U-TRUST condemns the manner in which MUC is trying to disrepute private drug treatment centres, he said.
Keshorchand insisted that as the victims claiming forcible detention are in their custody, MUC should clarify who the armed individuals/groups and private centres are to the public at the earliest failing which MUC should refrain from undermining drug rehabilitation centres.
