Imphal, March 06 2024:
Chief minister N Biren on Wednesday launched seven Mine Protected Vehicles (MPV) for Manipur police in order to face elements posing threat to the state and national security.
The launch event was attended by Works minister K Govindas, Water Resource minister Awangbow Newmai, Health and Family Welfare minister Sapam Ranjan, Transport minister Khasim Vashum, CAP & PD minister L Susindro, director general of police (DGP) Rajiv Singh and officials of Manipur police.
At the event, CM N Biren said that the seven Mine Protected Vehicles were issued for Manipur police in light of the state police's dire need of bullet proof and mine protected vehicles.
He also recounted various incidents of injuries suffered and deaths among Manipur police and para-military personnel while facing external aggressors disrupting the state and national security.
Stating that the launch of the MPVs is not an indication of continuation of the conflict, he mentioned that talks are underway with the Kuki representatives to bring peace in the state.
The MPVs are a requirement of the state security forces regardless of the existence of an emergency, he informed.
The state government proposed 10 of the MPV costing around Rs 2.50 crore each out of which seven arrived here in the first batch while the remaining three will be brought soon, Biren said, adding that the vehicles developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies including Turbo Charge power.
Even in case of flat tyres the MPVs can still operate up to 100 km with ease, accommodate 14 personnel and have 10 firing ports surrounded by bulletproof glass.
