Relief camp sports programme launched

Youth Affairs & Sports (YAS) minister Govindas Konthoujam on Sunday launched the 'Bishnupur District Relief Camp Sports Programme' at Mangolnganbi College, Ningthoukhong under which football kits would be distributed to inmates of relief camps in the district.
Under the programme, 22 sports disciplines have been identified and 1166 youths from various relief camps opened in the district enrolled, including 307 in football.
Speaking as chief guest at the launch programme, minister Govindas Konthoujam expressed confidence that the programme will provide an opportunity to the young children and youth who are interested in sports.
He also said that the programme will help identify talented youth who could further train and avail the facilities at the National Sports Academy or SAI in the state to achieve higher goals.
Bishnupur deputy commissioner Lourembam Bikram, who also took part in the function, stated that the during their visit, the committee set up by the Supreme Court of India had advised for engaging young children and youth in sports activities to help them cope with stress.
Thus, a meeting was convened with all the stakeholders so that the programme could be started at the earliest, he said, while adding that the training will be conducted on regular basis.
As part of the event, member of the U-19 South Asian Football Federation Championship winning team Arjun Oinam was also felicitated.
Football kits including cones, shin guard, jersey, shorts boots and socks were distributed during the programme also attended by Moirang MLA Thongam Shanti, Bishnupur ADC Hanjabam Bobby Sharma, district officials and coaches, among others.
