Imphal, November 05 2023:
Two suspected Kuki militants opened fire at a CDO team on duty in Moreh town and fled away on Sunday morning.
In the follow up search operation, the CDO team seized the scooter used by the attackers.
Police source said that the incident took place on Sunday around 10.40 am when the CDO team was checking commuters at a temporary checkpoint set up at New Moreh Church Junction, as part of the joint operation launched by central and state forces.
Five CDO teams led by an additional SP on foot patrolling along St George School road signalled persons, who came on a Suzuki Bugman bearing registration number MN06SD 5279, to stop for checking the Church junction.
However, the two turned back, took the ICP bypass road and fired two shots towards the CDO team.
One of the bullets hit the right front door of a Tata Sumo bullet proof vehicle of Thoubal CDO while the other bullet missed the mark.
As the CDO team chased them by firing some rounds in the air, the two militants left the scooter and ran towards the residential area.
The CDO team pursued and shifted some civilians to safer location after verification, and carried out further search operation.
Even though the two assailants could not be found, the CDO team recovered the scooter and handed it over to Moreh police station.
The team resumed their duty near Moreh police IB.
Mention may be made that 32 illegal immigrants were arrested during an operation launched on October 31 after SDPO Moreh Ch Anand was killed by Kuki militants.
In the follow up operations jointly conducted by central and state security forces, seven militants including one Myanmarese national have been arrested so far along with recovering several explosive materials and military gears.
Earlier on Saturday, IGAR (S) major general Rajan Sharawat told Kuki civil leaders that the operations are being conducted jointly by central and state forces and refuted the allegation of security forces looting jewellery, cash and harassing women during the operation while adding that all operations were well documented.
He asked the Kuki civil leaders to stop raising baseless accusation against the security forces and asked the Kuki women who were staying in front of the gates of AR camps to vacate and made them return to their respective homes by Saturday evening.
Consequently, the Kuki women sitting in front of AR camp gate left the place and returned to their homes after two Kuki men came there and clapped their hands without saying a single word.
