Convicted rapist sentenced to 14 years RI

Imphal, January 31 2024:
Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crime against Women, Manipur on Wednesday sentenced one Maimom Abo (23) s/o (L) Kala of Sanjenbam Makha Leikai, who had been convicted for raping an underage girl in 2008, to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment.
During the sentence hearing, the prosecution submitted to the court that on May 16, 2008 around 4.30 pm, the girl's mother filed a complaint report at Lamsang police station stating that in March-April of the same year, Abo sexually assaulted her underage daughter.
Based on the report, Lamsang police registered a case and the Judicial Magistrate First Class Imphal West transferred the case to Sessions Judge Imphal East for holding trial.
The Sessions Judge, Imphal West received the case on July 25, 2013 .
On November 16, 2015, the court framed charges against the accused under Section 376 of IPC and asked the accused whether he accept the charges or wants to go ahead with the trial, to which the accused opted for continuation of trial.
As such, the trial proceeded in the court.
On July 26, 2018, Sessions Judge Imphal West again transferred the case to Additional Sessions Judge (FTC) for CAW, and the latter received the same on August 18, 2018 .
During the trial conducted in the court of Additional Sessions Judge (FTC) for CAW Manipur, the prosecution examined eight witnesses.
The court then found the accused guilty of the charges under Section 376 of IPC and fixed the sentence hearing on Wednesday.
The court sentenced Maimom Abo to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment, but around 206 days he spent in judicial custody during the trial period would be commuted from the total sentence.
