Seminar on World Anthropology Post Congress begins

A three-day international seminar on World Anthropology Post Congress 2023 held as part of World Anthropology Day under the theme "Anthropology in Practice: Health, Culture & Security" commenced at Manipur University auditorium on Thursday.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function of the seminar being organised jointly by Manipur University Department of Anthropology, DM University Department of Anthropology, and Anthropological Society of Manipur along with anthropology departments of 17 colleges in the state, Health and Family Welfare minister Dr Sapam Ranjan conceded that as the seminar is being attended by intellectuals, scholars and academicians, he as a politician, feels overwhelmed in addressing such an elite gathering.
He further said that culture according to anthropological aspect in which one exists in a society and the shared way of thinking and behaving of a group of people in the society.
It is also the shared set of values, ideas, concepts, and rules of behaviour that allow a social group to function and perpetuate itself.
Protection of life and property is the most important thing if at all a society is to live in peace and ensure all round development, Dr Ranjan expressed.
The also minister stated that security has different dimensions with food security and law and order crucial for development and peaceful living.
Development of a society depends on the people living in it (society).
A society is best reflected by the health status of its people, human resources, standard of living and peace and harmony, he said.
The crisis in the state which has been lingering on for more than nine months has caused serious consequences to the life and property of the people, food security, and law and order situation.
This has created mental issues among the people and has become a cause for other problems, Dr Ranjan noted, while expressing hope that the seminar would find solutions to the prevailing crisis and pave the way for peace and harmony in the state.
Pointing out that the fertility rate of the state is very low and is having huge impact on the Manipuri society, the minister stressed that if a society has to sustain for 25 years, the fertility rate should be at 2.11 percent.
Maintaining that it is the right time to discuss the anthropological aspect of health, culture and security among others, the minister said that the state government is according top priority in ensuring essential healthcare services to the people and trying its best to reduce expenditures by patients.
The function was also attended by DM University vice chancellor professor N Rajmuhon, Anthropological Society of Manipur president Prof K Sharatchandra, Allahabad University Department of Anthropology former head Professor Vijoy S Sahay, Manipur University Department of Anthropology head Prof S Jibonkumar Singh and students and scholars.
