Liver transplant facility soon: Dr Palin

After successfully conducting 100 cases of kidney transplantation, commemoration function of which was held Wednesday, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) will soon be equipped with requisite facilities for liver transplant, informed SHRI managing director Dr Kh Palin.
Dr Palin made the announcement in a function held to commemorate 100 kidney transplants done in the institute, on Wednesday at SHRI auditorium attended by representatives of All Manipur Kidney Transplants Welfare Association, kidney recipients, donors and their families.
Also launching the kidney care card during the function, Dr Kh Palin said that the kidney dialysis patients and post kidney transplant patients should possess the card as it provides 10 to 20 percent concession for treatment at SHRI.
Kidney dialysis patients require blood transfusion during treatment for which they need to inject a medicine costing around Rs 3000 to 4000.However, SHRI is planning to take up measures to provide the said injection free of cost to the public.
Dr Palin further informed that there are around two lakh patients suffering from kidney disease in a year in India of which only around 12,000 undergo kidney transplantations while many are left hapless due to shortage of donors.
He also expressed gratitude to Mohan Foundation for taking up awareness programmes on organ donation for the last 5 years.
The managing director also expressed delight over people in the state volunteering to donate organs with some already making the pledge to donate organs to SHRI after death.
The hospital also has provisions for many types of organ transplants besides performing 120 cornea transplantations.
The government has also given the approval for conducting liver transplant which the hospital will undertake soon, he assured.
Joining the media briefing, SHRI consultant nephrologist Dr Guliver said that the government consented to conduct of kidney transplant to SHRI on April 22, 2016 with the first successfully performed in August the same year followed by the 100th transplantation achieved in November 2023.As of now, SHRI has conducted altogether 109 kidney transplants, he said.
