PRI representatives demand conduct of elections

Representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) on Monday submitted joint memorandum to Imphal East deputy commissioner (DC) dina Khumanthem demanding immediate cancellation of the administrative committees formed by DCs of valley districts and conduct of long pending elections to the panchayats.
Seventeen Zila Parishads and representatives of panchayats under Imphal East district on Monday took out a rally and handed over the memorandum to DC Diana raising objection against constitution of the administrative committees on March 7.Speaking to reporters, Makheng Dolaithabi GP Zilla Parishad member Ningthoukhongjam Sanatomba contended that formation of the administrative committees of six valley districts instead of conducting the pending Panchayat elections, is against the law and condemnable in the strongest terms.
He asserted that the committees should be dissolved with immediate effect and Panchayat elections conducted.
While suggesting that the government either extend term of office of the PRI members or conduct the elections, he cautioned of seeking legal actions in case in the event of failing to consider the government ignores its proposals.
Pukhao GP Up-Pradhan S Biswarani, who was also took part in the rally, condemned alleged indifferent attitude of the government stating that it amounts to violation of rights of the PRIs.
The government uphold democratic norms in the state and conduct PRI elections at the earliest, asserted the up-pradhan.
