Assam Govt approves Meetei Mayek (MM) in educational institutions

Close on the heels of recognising Manipuri language as associate official language in four districts of Assam thereby fulfilling the cherished dream of the Meeteis and Manipuri Muslims settling in the state, the government of Assam has formally approved introduction of Meetei Mayek (MM) in educational institutions across the state.
The decision to this effect was arrived at during a cabinet meeting of Assam held on Sunday to facilitate interested students study Manipuri literature or pursue higher studies in Meetei Mayek.
The Assam cabinet stressed that it will enable candidates from Assam to apply for jobs in Manipur requiring mandatory knowledge of Meetei Mayek.
Meanwhile, different organisations and individuals have expressed gratitude to the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led BJP government of Assam for taking the decision in the interest of Manipuris settling in Assam.
Speaking to reporters in this regard on Monday, Meetei Eyek Erol Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) president Khaidem Ingocha Meitei pointed out that MEELAL has been taking up various steps for the promotion and development of Meetei Mayek for a long time, not only in Manipur but also outside the state.
He further informed that MEELAL had started taking up initiatives to impart Meetei Mayek education to Manipuris settling in different parts of Assam's Cachar district since 2022-23.MEELAL Assam branch was also set up for the said purpose.
The Assam government had even granted recognition to Manipuri language as the associate official language in four districts of the state.
It is very fortunate that the Assam government on Sunday convened a cabinet meeting and approved introduction of Meetei Mayek in educational institutions across Assam.
The MEELAL president also expressed gratitude to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking the decision stating that the cabinet approval will remain as a remarkable day in the history of Meetei Mayek.
He also expressed hope that the Assam government would provide opportunity to learn Meetei Mayek up to the university level.
Khaidem Ingocha also expressed gratitude to different organisations in Assam including Manipuri Youth Front of Assam; Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Assam; MEELAL Assam Pana and others for their role in promoting Meetei Mayek.
Meanwhile, Manipuri Language protection Coordination Committee (MLPCC) has thanked the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet ministers for taking the decision of introducing Meetei Mayek in all educational institutions of Assam.
