Mortal remains of Lucy Maring laid to rest

Imphal, July 19 2023: The mortal remains of Marem Lucy Maring was laid to rest at Kanemram village near Pallel today with people paying tributes and praying for the departed soul.

Hill Area Committee (HAC) president Dinganglung Gangmei, Chandel AC MLA SS Olish, Maring Uparap Assembly president K Yaima, NWUC president Chorita Tarao, CNPO general secretary Thandok Lamkang, NWU president Asha Wungnam and UNC president NG Lorho among other community leaders attended the last rites.

M Lucy Maring was shot dead on July 15 at Keibi Heikakmapal.

Police have so far arrested nine persons in connection with the killing.

M Lucy Maring was 57 .

She was daughter of (L) M Thoukhal Maring and Shangamla Maring.

She hailed from Narum village and was staying at Beaulahram, Pallel.

At the time she was killed, Lucy was residing at Langol Games village, Zone III .

She is survived by a 16-year-old daughter, Marem Shangpui Maring.

The last rites were held today after family members claimed her remains from JNIMS Hospital mortuary today.

Notably, her mortal remains were claimed by the family after the Government, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity and United Naga Council inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday.

After a postmortem was conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), people turned up at the morgue to pay their last respect.

People held a condolence service and showed their respect by paying tributes.

The condolence service was organised by the Naga Welfare Association, Langol National Games Village and was attended by community leaders including members of UNC, COCOMI and Maring Uparap Assembly.

Manipur Legislative Assembly Hill Areas Committee Chairman Dinganglung Gangmei and MLA SS Olish were present.

Later, her mortal remains were taken to Kanemram village where last rites were held.

While the mortal remains was taken to her village, members of Ayangpalli Progressive Women Organisation and Soibam Leikai Ayangpalli Youth Club paid their tribute to M Lucy on the road.

Addressing the gathering, HAC president Dinganglung Gangmei said the present violent conflict that first erupted on May 3 is yet to be contained to restore peace.

Amid the tension, the brutal killing of "our sister" M Lucy Maring is strongly condemned, he said, praying against recurrence of such incidents in the future.

While praying for peace to be restored in Manipur, he thanked the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) for their understanding of the sentiments of the Nagas and providing assistance and support.

Chandel MLA SS Olish too condemned the killing of M Lucy Maring in the strongest terms.

The killing of the innocent Maring woman amid the tension between the Meiteis and the Kukis was very unfortunate, she said.

M Lucy's death has hurt the sentiments of all the people.

May it serve as a reminder of grief and pain people are feeling amid the tension and help sanity prevail to end violence and bring peace in Manipur, she said.

Maring Uparap Assembly president K Yaima too vehemently condemned the killing of M Lucy Maring and prayed to God for an end to such killings.

He thanked Chandel AC MLA SS Olish, Kakching AC MLA M Rameshwar, HAC president D Gangmei for giving emotional support.

He also thanked the DIG, DC, SP, OC and all police personnel and district administration officers for their assistance.

A condolence service was observed at M Lucy's home at Beaulahram in the presence of Kakching AC MLA M Rameshwar, UNC members and leaders of Ching Tam Apunba Meira Paibi.

MLA M Rameshwar and the community leaders shared the grief and pain of the bereaved family members and prayed for blessing to Lucy's daughter.

Marem Shangpui Maring (16) is a Class X student.

Meanwhile, the Zeliangrong Union (ZU) and its frontal organizations have condemned the brutal killing of M Lucy Maring in the strongest terms.

In a statement, ZU said M Lucy's killing was a cowardly act and condemnable by all right-thinking citizens.

ZU has been condemning all forms of violence.

Violence will bring no solution but only destruction.

"We earnestly appeal to all parties, particularly two warring communities, to come forward for meaningful dialogue, which is the only means to bring normalcy and an amicable and lasting solution," it said.
