Imphal, October 06 2023:
Unknown armed miscreants attacked the Khurai block office of National People's Party (NPP) at Khurai Konsam Leikai in Imphal East on Friday around 1.50 am.
Raising strong objection against the attack, NPP national vice-president Yumnam Joykumar said that he along with the party president will submit relevant report to the ministry of home affairs seeking swift investigation and booking the miscreants responsible.
The party's office is located opposite to the residence of National People's Youth Front (NPYF), NPP's youth wing, president Laitonjam Jayananda, who also contested the 2022 state assembly election from Khurai assembly constituency.
As per CCTV footage, the attackers came in a Maruti Gypsy and fired around 10 shots in the drive-by shooting incident.
Around 5 bullets passed through the glass windows and hit the ceiling while the other bullets hit the wall.
There is no casualty as the incident took place late after midnight.
Addressing a press conference at the party office, Naoremthong, here, on Friday, NPP national vice-president and former deputy chief minister Y Joykumar strongly condemned the firing attack and demanded clarification from those involved.
It is unfortunate to witness such ugly incidents when the whole state is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, he said and demanded the government to investigate the incident and book the culprits.
In case the state government fails to investigate the incident, NPP, after consulting the party president, will submit a report to the ministry of home affairs seeking swift investigation and justice, the former DGP of Manipur said.
He also expressed suspicion that the attack may have been carried out by some individuals, who are against the party's stand for the unity and territorial integrity of Manipur.
Joining the media briefing, NPYF president L Jayananda termed the attack as an act of cowardice and said that there is no place for such violence in democracy.
The party has been standing and raising its voice for the territory and identity of the state.
Even if some groups or sections of the society are not happy with the conduct of the party, NPP always keeps it door open for sorting out issues through peaceful dialogue, he said while urging those responsible to refrain from indulging such acts in future.
Recalling how some unidentified miscreants exploded a bomb near his gate at the time of 2022 state assembly election, he urged the state government to investigate the incident and book the culprits at the earliest.
