Imphal, October 06 2023:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has urged the the Secretary General of the United Nations to initiate steps to bring an end to the ongoing conflict and bring normalcy in Manipur while standing by the ST for Meiteis demand.
In a written communication submitted on October 5, WMC requested the United Nations to collaborate with the Government of India and Government of Manipur while also apprising the international organisation with a brief history of the Meeteis and Chin-Kukis along with a background of the current conflict which erupted on May 3, said a press release issued by Yambem Arun Meetei, secretary general (Central Executive Committee) WMC.
The WMC alleged that despite the existence of irrefutable evidence, the Chin-Kukis have engaged in a relentless campaign of disinformation using various media outlets and social media.
They have gone to the extent of submitting memoranda to the UN and to the Governments of Israel, Germany and Canada with "fake information and data", WMC said.
It also pointed out the current volatile situation and the attacks on farmers reportedly by Chin-Kuki militants which has caused major disruption in the cultivation of paddy in the valley and is likely to lead to conflict-induced famine.
Further, WMC also detailed the ill-thought out heavy handed approach employed by security forces on students protesting the kidnapping and brutal murder of two Meetei students allegedly by Chin-Kuki militants and ecausing injuries to as many as 40 students.
In the letter, WMC stated the facts with evidential data and requested the UN to conduct their own survey to verify the facts of this conflict and use their office to take immediate action to end the violence, said the release.
Further, WMC also requested the United Nations to collaborate closely with the Government of India to safeguard the rights of the Meeteis who are the indigenous and aboriginal people of the region by including them in the list of Scheduled Tribes of the Indian Constitution.
