Imphal, April 05 2024:
With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, the Congress party unveiled its 84-page manifesto, titled 'Nyay Patra'.
Among its array of promises, the party pledges to conduct a nationwide caste census and effect Constitutional amendment to increase the 50 per cent cap on reservation.
The Congress party also focusses on addressing the pressing issues faced by the North Eastern states, particularly Manipur.
Emphasising the region's rich pluralism and diversity, the manifesto vows to bring about significant changes to alleviate the challenges plaguing the state.
The manifesto launch took place in Delhi, where party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, alongside senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, presented the election document to the media.
Former union finance minister P Chidambaram, who headed the committee for drafting the manifesto, was also in attendance.
Addressing the gathering, Kharge emphasised the significance of the manifesto, stating, "This manifesto will serve as a document for justice in the poUtical history of the country.
It encompasses the five pillars of the 'Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra' - youth, farmers, women, workers, and equity - from which 25 guarantees will emerge".
Highlighting the deteriorating situation in Manipur under the BJP/NDA government's tenure, the Congress vowed to take immediate action by removing the existing state government.
In its place, the party promised to establish a Reconciliation Commission aimed at fostering political and administrative settlements that satisfy all sections of society.
Additionally, the manifesto commits to providing appropriate compensation and redress for victims and survivors of conflicts in Manipur.
Furthermore, the Congress pledges to pursue a final solution and agreement with Naga groups based on the preliminary agreement reached in 2013-14.Addressing infrastructure deficits in the North Eastern states is also a key focus, with promises to allocate more funds for infrastructure development and bolster Border Trade to enhance economic activity.
Reviving the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) and empowering them as effective instruments of local government is another key aspect of the manifesto.
The Congress assures that a greater portion of developmental funds will be directed through ADCs to address local needs.
