Rabies is a deadly disease that nearly always causes death.
Rabies virus infects the central nervous system.
Symptoms may occur from days to years after exposure to the virus and include delirium (confusion), abnormal behaviour, hallucinations, hydrophobia (fear of water), and insomnia (difficulty sleeping), which precede coma and death.
Inappropriate medical care, including rabies vaccination, can result in human infection with rabies if an individual comes into touch with the saliva or neural tissue of an infected animal, such as through biting or scratching.
